Assessment & Selection Policy
We feel that it's important to be open and share with pupils/parents the holistic approach we have to assessment in PE & Sport.
Assessment in PE & Sport
Purpose: To enable pupils to progress and reach their optimum level of achievement.
Vision: By using assessment in sport, pupils will be motivated by performance and celebrate success at all levels. A holistic approach will encourage pupils to look beyond the isolated sport, at their physical and mental development.
Usage: To monitor pupils progress between Years 1 – 6, evaluate success and objectives set for each age group.
How we will assess:
- At the beginning of the academic year, Years 1, 3, 5 will undertake simple physical literacy challenges. These will be recorded and monitored using a tracking system.
- This will enable us to check for progress, assign ability groups, and help those who are identified as requiring further assistance through the ‘IGNITE’ & ‘Let’s do this’ programmes.
- Teachers for each unit of work, for example rugby, gymnastics will award pupils, a grade using the criteria below.
Putting the pupils at the heart of assessment:
- The physical literacy challenges are for teacher observations, and allow us to make observations on pupils, informing groupings and 1-1 interactions across all sports. We will use the results for Intra competitions and build an exciting challenge to the events.
- They also allow pupils to track their progress along the junior school pathway and can identify certain key skills to improve and develop.
- Pupils will also be notified of their grade and marked in homework planners. They will be encouraged to view our criteria, discuss with parents and if uncertain approach the PE department for more clarity and feedback.
What are we looking for in a holistic approach to PE & Games:
- Strength
- Speed
- Balance
- Coordination
- Competence
- Confidence
The criteria for assessing at the end of each sport/activity, follows the junior school guidelines:
Attainment
(pupils’ academic ability and performance)
The majority of pupils will receive a 3 as this indicates the pupil is working at the expected level of attainment at LGJS. Pupils at this level are performing above the nationally expected standard, and are producing work of a very pleasing standard.

Team Selection Policy
We are delighted that as a PE department we can offer pupils the opportunity to participate in competitive matches against other schools. The policy below outlines the criteria which staff utilise when making decisions on team and squad selection.
- Performance in training
- Skills performed unopposed
- Skills performed under pressure
- Effort – Willingness to succeed
- Mental toughness
- Focus / attention / concentration
- Game/event understanding
- Performance in competitions
- Skills performed under pressure in a competitive situation
- Positional awareness and ability to keep to a team structure
- Rules understanding including laws of the game.
- Sportsmanship and behaviour
The PE and Sport department reserve the right to alter teams based upon the above criteria.
Pupils develop both physically and mentally at different rates and as a result there will be movement between teams, and sometimes this will result in a pupil being lowered into another squad. The member of staff responsible for the squad will make every effort to speak to the individual pupil who has been lowered, and with improved performances; there is every opportunity to be reselected.
