Year 5
In the first term we concentrate on improving and extending skills and knowledge in English and Maths, so that pupils are more than adequately prepared for the examination for entry to the Senior School which takes place in November.
From poetry to playscripts; from persuasive arguments to report writing, the children’s writing ability is explored and developed. They become confident speakers through making presentations about eminent Victorians and writing and performing speeches. The love of books is nurtured by reading and studying in depth a variety of class novels.
Interactive resources and Maths puzzles instil mathematical confidence and enjoyment. Each year, the pupils in Years 5 and 6 participate in the Primary Maths Challenge, and achieve excellent results.
ICT continues to be an integral part of the Year 5 curriculum. They learn to code using the Scratch language, and use formulae and charts in Excel. Pupils use PC and iPad technology to support their work in other lessons, researching facts, making movies, and presenting information.
A highlight of our Victorians topic is a trip to Shugborough Hall, an excellent day out and a great hands on experience. Our trip to Everdon, allows children to develop their geographical skills and carry out a river study.
Studying the life and struggles of Martin Luther King in RE inspires pupils to consider their own beliefs and moral choices. We also visit a local mosque and explore the Islamic faith.
Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) allows the children to discuss such issues as prejudice and discrimination, whilst also considering more personal aspects of the subject such as relationships and friendships.
Budding artists are encouraged to explore several artistic techniques including collage, watercolour and pastels. Sawing, gluing, designing and problem solving create a real buzz in Year 5 around Christmas time when they make a moving toy. Later, designing and making biscuits - always a popular topic!
Towards the end of the year, we spend a week in the woods in Oxfordshire. Pupils build on the skills and experience they have gained through our Forest School programme, during a week of Bushcraft activities.
With specialist teachers for Music, Science, PE and French the children receive a very broad and balanced education, complemented by the close and consistent presence of a dedicated class teacher for all other subjects and pastoral care.
